Hi David,
You can install WP Fan Page v2 on your primary site or a free WP site, it doesn't matter . WP Fan Page v2 just run in WP environment, it's not harm any WP site or other plugins. It allows your fanpage get LIKES and FANS. Create a Freelance writer fanpage and link to your website, post your website content, people'll following your content and redirect to your website, there is no negatively affects a WP site or other plugins

Have a nice day.

My primary purpose for my WordPress site is to market my services as a freelance writer. Are there any ways in which WP Fan Page v2 negatively affects a WP site or other plugins? Is it not compatible with some sites or plugins? And why is the application based in a WP plugin rather than something else? If it's all about getting more fans to my FB fan page, why is my WP site the place where the work is done? I just don't want any adverse effects to my current site. I would like to boost my fan page. Can you answer my concerns?
